About Our Client

Our client is the largest non-food retailer in South Africa. They have been in operation for more than 80 years and have expanded their footprint to include over 1,400 stores through nine different store formats.

Their strategy for growth is underpinned by four key levers: comparable store growth, new space growth, margin expansion and credit.

They aim to improve revenue by growing comparable store sales and increasing new space growth, as they continue to roll out additional stores in South Africa and other African countries.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

Tax compliance and reporting

  1. Complete tax computations for the Group, the Group companies on a monthly, quarterly and yearly basis for financial reporting purposes for all current and deferred taxes which meet all IFRS requirements and meets compliance with all applicable Tax Acts.
  2. Manage completion of tax computations for subsidiary companies on a monthly, quarterly and yearly basis for financial reporting purposes for all current and deferred taxes which meet all IFRS requirements and meets compliance with all applicable Tax Acts.
  3. Complete complex tax computations for the Group and Holdings and complete and review all necessary reconciliations for accuracy of reporting.
  4. Analyse financial information and prepare financial reports as required.
  5. Prepare, review and approve monthly tax journal entries and account analysis. Ensure all entries are complete and accurate.
  6. Complete and review tax notes for entities in the Annual Financial Statements.
  7. Manage, complete and review and take ownership of all local statutory tax returns and provisional tax returns that they are correct and submitted timeously.
  8. Complete and oversee the execution and completion of responses to SARS in the event of queries or tax audits.
  9. Complete and oversee and review tax analysis and withholding tax calculations.
  10. Ensure provisional tax and withholding taxes are paid over timeously and accurately.
  11. Providing indirect tax advice and training with the objective of ensuring compliance and identifying and implementing VAT efficiencies.
  12. Compiling, maintaining and communicating tax policies, internal guidelines and manuals.
  13. Communicating changes to tax legislation, SARS policies and judicial decisions.

Process Improvement, Efficiency and Governance

  1. Ensures the credibility of the results maintained in the General Ledger used for internal and external reporting purposes by streamlining processes, improving controls and ensuring adequate audit trail supported by automated systems.
  2. Reduce output time of deliverables to ensure timely data for decision making by stakeholders.
  3. Lay down governance processes for accuracy and process with indirect departments for example legal to ensure high standard of governance and compliance.
  4. Implement policies and procedures where necessary.
  5. Initiate, plan and drive ad hoc tax projects thus ensuring successful completion of all projects which ensure tax compliance.
  6. Assist and advise business units with tax-related issues and perform special projects as required.

Advise / Recommend Business Solutions

  1. Ensure that all policies and procedures adopted and followed by the Group comply with and fall within the required legislation of the countries in which we operate.
  2. Introduce Tax changes in the business as and when the Tax legislation changes

Stakeholder Relationship Building, Networking and Management

  1. Maintain a relationship with the revenue authorities in the various countries.
  2. Educate all business stakeholders to ensure tax legislation is complied with and tax requirements met timeously.
  3. Respond to queries and educate all stakeholders in respect of tax legislation requirements.
  4. Advise the business on how to reduce tax liabilities, sets up compliance procedures, and communicates frequently with senior business leaders.
  5. Liaison with tax authorities, auditors and external parties as and when required.
  6. Provide training to various business units when required.

Performance Monitoring

  1. Manage ongoing change management and transformation activities, including continuous improvement of service delivery and efficiency metrics.
  2. Keep abreast of current and new tax legislation and ensure implemented and complied with.
  3. Ensure company tax policies are compiled with by all stakeholders within the company.
  4. Ensure prompt responses to Revenue Services and administrative queries.

People Management

Qualifications and experience:

- CA(SA) qualified

- Higher Diploma in Taxation

- 3 Years or more, relevant corporate tax experience

- Hyperion knowledge an advantage

- Oracle or SAP experience
