Job Description

This positions involves interfacing with the environmental and business staff, external consultants, other industries, and regulator. Two-thirds of one's time will be spent travelling throughout South Africa as well as internationally in order to deliver support needed on site. Other responsibilities include:

  • A Technical Assurance role for the downstream portfolio in South Africa. The role includes development, assurance and delivery of Sustainable Contaminated Land Management (CLM) strategies, site characterization, conceptual site models, risk assessments and remediation strategies;
  • Strategic and technical support on water resource management and environmental monitoring related to development of onshore upstream activities;
  • Identification, development and delivery of relevant SGW-related R&D, advocacy, and training programs designed to both maintain our capability to deliver leading-edge SGW technology, and to effectively communicate the Organisation's sustainable risk-based approach and technical positions on key soil and groundwater issues to policy makers, regulators, and other key stakeholders.
  • Support to downstream and upstream businesses on compliance with the Organisation's Control Framework and external requirements and development of new or modification of current internal SGW-policy.
  • Development of strategies in close conjunction with various internal stakeholders, and supported by or in cooperation with external consultants;

The successful candidate must also be able to:

  • Demonstrate a proven track record of remediation strategy development and successful regulatory negotiations, litigation and claim management support;
  • Desire and ability to contribute co-operatively in a highly collaborative, yet globally-distributed virtual team;
  • Implement health and safety understanding in critical activities and improvement plans;
  • Demonstrate an understanding of relevant businesses and corporate management systems;
  • Work on industrial site;
  • Contribute to value-adding advocacy programs designed to convincingly communicate technical position on key soil and groundwater issues, to policy makers, regulators, and other stakeholders.

The Successful Applicant

The successful candidate will be a South African citizen with strong academic qualifications and rich work experience. They will be a highly strategically-minded individual who has strong negotiation skills.

Further, ability to work within a team environment is critical and the ability to travel is critical.

The Senior Soil & GW Engineer will demonstrate experience of successful sustainable risk-based contaminated land management strategy development, site assessment and groundwater monitoring programs.

He/she will have expertise in contaminant fate & transport concepts, tiered environmental risk assessment, hydrogeological analyses (aquifer testing, stratigraphic interpretation/correlation), remediation technologies and RSA regulatory requirements.
