Business Manager

Tell us about your PageGroup career so far:

I joined Michael Page in March 2010, specialising in the recruitment of Sales professionals. I had worked for a smaller boutique agency prior to Page and at that point, the business was only 4 years old in South Africa, but it still possessed the 'international feel' that was promised. When the opportunity came up to start a new recruitment discipline – Procurement and Supply Chain, I jumped at it. It was a market that was growing rapidly in South Africa and I got the opportunity to specialise in it.

Since then I have enjoyed 2 promotions, one to Managing Consultant and the other to Manager. I have been a Business Manager with a business development focus as well as managed teams. I have been selected for PageGroup's Annual High Flyers program (a 5 star trip away to the Reunion Islands), enjoyed the rewards of Gold Club lunches, and also won a Manager of the Quarter award. Through it all, the Michael Page leadership has always been supportive of my career aspirations, family and well-being.

Why did you join PageGroup?
I intially thought about joining Page to be part of a multinational organisation with international career progression, and whilst that is true, it was the people that sold it for me. Everyone I met emulated the 5 key values of PageGroup: Passion, Pride, Resilience, Teamwork and Fun.

What are your career aspirations with PageGroup?
My career aspirations are both lateral and vertical. At the moment our Procurement and Supply Chain team is still growing. So nurturing it, growing the team in terms of headcount and skill are the short term goals. Long term would be to add a discipline to my mandate, with Directorship and so forth to follow. The great thing about Page is that it's a business that rewards merit. Incentives, awards and career progression opportunities are merit-based. You are the catalyst of your own success. And the markers and guidelines are very clear about what is required to achieve success.

What is most rewarding about your job?
Definitely placing a candidate! In a country with over 2,000 different recruitment agencies, being a specialist is rare. So very frequently you are exposed to a role that may have more than one person working on the position. With our tried and tested methodologies, state-of-the-art recruitment technology, our global database and networks, we are able to offer clients a pool of talent that others cannot. It's not about the placement fee (we are bonus-driven not commissioned-based), so our motives towards assisting our clients are unadulterated and the candidate profiles submitted are fit for purpose.

Do you have any advice to anybody thinking about joining PageGroup?
All our consultants have an X-Factor - something unique that makes them stand out. Recruitment is quite like sales, it's not a fluffy HR role, so make sure you are prepared to speak and engage with people, and build relationships. If you are looking for a place that offers you a career and not just a job, is fast-paced with no two days being the same, offers rewards and incentives and is always true to what it promises, then a career at Michael Page is for you.
